Ignoring the mass murderers amongst us

It has become so cliche to hear reports of people saying what a nice person that their neighbor/family member/friend was, and that they would never have guessed them to be capable of murder.  I always wonder if that is really the case, or if some people just are that socially clueless.  Take Debora Maruca-Kovac, whose family took in Robert A. Hawkins, the guy who killed 8 people in an Omaha mall yesterday.  She says:

“He didn’t cause a lot of trouble. He tried to help out all the time,” Maruca-Kovac said. “He was very thankful for everything. He wasn’t a violent person at all.”

He had broken up with his girlfriend two weeks ago, lost his job last week, and, according to Maruca-Kovac, had a drinking problem and was depressed.  So the drunken, depressed kid whose life is falling apart buys an assault weapon which, naturally, bears little thought.

She remembered a gentle young man who loved animals. She regarded him so benignly that when he showed her an SKS semiautomatic rifle the night before his attack, she thought little of it, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

That’s right, he showed her the gun the night before the shootings.  I’m sort of speechless on this one, but MSNBC has lots more details.
